Choosing when to visit the Algarve
Pick your dates around beach time, walking or a winter stay, and compare the town and transport rather than relying on a quiet-month promise.
The Algarve suits different trips at different times of year. Summer works for a beach-focused holiday. Spring and autumn can suit walking and exploring towns. Winter can be pleasant for a slower stay, provided you are comfortable with rain, cooler evenings and reduced seasonal services.
Use climate averages as a starting point
IPMA's Faro climate record for 1991–2020 gives average daily highs of about 23.5°C in May, 29.2°C in August and 23.3°C in October. These are long-term averages at one station, not the forecast for your holiday or a description of every part of the coast.
Sea temperature, wind and the day's conditions matter separately. A warm afternoon does not guarantee comfortable swimming, particularly on more exposed beaches. Check flags and local advice before entering the water.
Match the month to the base
For summer, choose accommodation with a realistic route to the beach and reliable cooling. A busy resort may be exactly what you want for restaurants and evening activity. If you prefer a quieter stay, compare specific neighbourhoods and dates rather than blaming visitors of a particular nationality.
For spring or autumn walking, check coastal path access and leave space for a rainy day. Avoid walking close to unstable cliff edges, and follow any barriers even if a photograph shows people beyond them.
In winter, a town with year-round residents and useful transport may work better than an isolated seasonal resort. Ask about heating, nearby food shops and which facilities actually operate during your stay.
Compare the full price

Choose between Faro and Lagos
Faro can suit an old-town stay with a Ria Formosa outing. The boat needs its own weather and return check; an island transfer is not the same as a sightseeing circuit. Lagos puts the old centre and western cliff coast together, but individual beaches still have different approaches and steps.
Before choosing a room for an off-season stay, check the food shops, local transport and heating near that actual address. For arrival, compare the separate airport coach with travelling into Faro for a train. A quiet month is useful only when the services needed for your trip still fit.
