Faro makes a useful base for the old town and Ria Formosa, with the beach or islands as separate outings. It is also a practical arrival city, but the airport is outside the centre. Give yourself time for the local transfer before a train or boat departure.

Enjoy Faro before heading elsewhere
A walk inside the old-town walls and around the marina can make a pleasant first afternoon after a flight. Leave a boat trip until you know your arrival time and have put your luggage down. The centre, Praia de Faro and the offshore islands are different destinations.
For an early onward train, staying near Faro station can simplify the morning. Check whether luggage storage is available if you arrive before check-in; do not assume a small station or guesthouse always offers it.
Choose the island outing you mean
Ilha Deserta's operator sells its own commercial ferry and shuttle services from Cais da Porta Nova. This is not a municipal ferry or part of an ordinary city bus pass. Read the return time and any weather conditions before paying.
A sightseeing boat circuit and time ashore are also different products. Choose according to whether you want a ride through the lagoon or a longer beach stop, and take water and sun protection suitable for that plan.
Connect from the airport carefully
The airport's public transport page lists Próximo city services and the separate Vamus airport option for other Algarve towns. Check the current fare with the operator; the bus and rail tickets are separate.
For Lagos, compare a direct airport coach if its schedule fits with travelling into Faro for the regional train. Include the waiting time and final hotel approach in both choices, rather than comparing only the time on board.
Where to Stay
Stay near the old town for evening walks, or compare a room close to the train and coach stations if you have an early onward journey. A resort address outside Faro may need different airport transport from a central room.
Getting Around
Próximo city buses link the airport and Faro, while Vamus has separate airport services towards other Algarve towns. There is no airport railway station. For a train to Lagos, first reach Faro station and check the regional departure.

Worth Paying For

Skip a boat departure that leaves no comfortable margin before your flight. A short old-town walk and lunch can be a better final-day plan than returning from an island against the clock.
