Portugal works well as a few connected stays. Pair Lisbon with Sintra and the coast, or spend longer around Porto and the northern towns. The Algarve, Madeira and the Azores each need their own travel plan, with enough time for the journeys as well as the views.
Schengen membership does not guarantee a journey without border checks. Carry the travel documents you need and check current border controls.
A first mainland trip can join Lisbon and Porto with a stop in Coimbra if you have the time. With only four or five nights, one main base is often more comfortable. Lisbon has enough neighbourhoods for several days, while Sintra needs a full day of its own. Porto pairs well with Braga, Guimarães or the Douro, but each excursion takes time away from the city.

Use CP's planner for the actual stations and date. Long-distance Alfa Pendular and Intercidades tickets have reserved departures. Promo fares can be available at least five days ahead, subject to a limited allocation. They are changeable under their conditions but not refundable; check the difference payable if you move to another train.
Short urban journeys use different tickets. A Lisbon city day pass does not automatically include Sintra, and Porto's Andante zones are not the same as CP's suburban fare zones. Follow the relevant route guide before loading a card. Engineering work can also replace part of a train journey with a bus.
A prato do dia is the day's dish. Some places sell a fuller lunch menu around it, but bread, a drink, dessert or coffee may be separate. Read what is written and order the extras you want. A sandwich or pastry can suit a lighter stop without pretending it is the same meal as a restaurant lunch.
For a useful comparison, look at the total bill for your group. A displayed price per person, a shared fish dish and a price by weight are different offers. Ask before ordering if the unit is unclear.
The budgets below are adjustable examples, not surveys of current room rates. A dorm allowance buys one bed. A private-room allowance buys the whole room, so divide only that part when sharing. Add intercity tickets, airport journeys and the paid visits you choose to your own plan.
Madeira and the Azores are separate flying destinations. A mainland rail itinerary does not cover island transfers or hiking transport. Keep a weather alternative on an island trip rather than placing every outdoor activity on one fixed day.

Compare Coimbra, Braga, Guimarães and Évora with your bigger-city options. A room near the station and the places you want to visit can save more than a low rate that needs several extra transfers.
Check central Lisbon, popular Algarve beach areas and island stays carefully for your dates. Summer, holidays and events can change the price of the same room; compare the full booking rather than a regional average.
Read the actual prato do dia menu and ask which extras are included. Compare CP train departures before fixing your hotel nights. In Lisbon, choose between stored credit and a day ticket based on the journeys you will take, including any train to Sintra or Cascais.
Give Lisbon time for neighbourhood walks, a riverside afternoon and a meal you do not need to rush. Alfama, Belém and the hills around Chiado work best as separate parts of the day. Keep Sintra as a full excursion rather than an extra stop after city sightseeing.
Porto rewards a stay with time on both sides of the Douro. Walk the historic centre, leave an afternoon for Gaia or a museum, and use a separate day for the valley. Its compact centre still has steep climbs, especially between the river and the higher streets.
Choose one main visit in Sintra and give it enough time. The station, old town and hilltop Pena Palace are separate parts of the day. A second attraction can work, but only after you account for the approach, ticket time and return to your base.
Coimbra is worth an overnight stop if you want more than a quick look at the university. Give the upper town a morning, then slow down by the Mondego or in the lower streets. The climb between them is part of the visit, so keep your luggage journey simple.
Braga suits a day of old-town streets and a separate visit to Bom Jesus. You can do both from a Porto base, but an overnight stay leaves more time for an evening meal and a slower start. Keep the hilltop sanctuary separate from the compact central walk.
Guimarães is a comfortable choice for a historic-centre walk with time for a café and a few interiors. The castle and Palace of the Dukes sit above the central squares. Check their current access before deciding how much of the day to spend inside.
Aveiro works well for a canal-side walk, a meal and time to look at the streets beyond the busiest boat stops. Costa Nova is a separate coastal outing. Choose whether you want both before setting a train home, rather than assuming the beach is beside the station.
Évora is easier to enjoy when you give the walled centre a full day and avoid the hottest walking hours. The Roman Temple, cathedral area and São Francisco sit within a manageable visit, with time for a long lunch and an evening in the streets around Praça do Giraldo.
Faro makes a useful base for the old town and Ria Formosa, with the beach or islands as separate outings. It is also a practical arrival city, but the airport is outside the centre. Give yourself time for the local transfer before a train or boat departure.
Lagos combines a walkable old centre with beaches and a much more spread-out cliff coast. Keep a town-and-beach day separate from a longer Ponta da Piedade outing. Boats, cliff paths and beach stairs offer different views and need different conditions.
Funchal is a useful Madeira base for gardens, the waterfront and meals between outdoor days. The mountain trails need their own bookings and transport. Keep the order flexible enough to use good weather for a hike and a cloudy day for the city.
Ponta Delgada gives you a practical São Miguel base for meals, the waterfront and trips into the island. Sete Cidades lies to the west and Furnas to the east, so give each a separate day. Keep a clear-weather outing movable rather than driving across the island to a clouded viewpoint on a fixed schedule.
Cascais is an easy place to slow down after Lisbon: choose a town beach, walk past the citadel and leave time for the coast around Boca do Inferno. Guincho is a different, farther outing. A day here works best when you do not try to collect every beach.
Use Peso da Régua as a practical Douro base, then choose the parts of the valley you want to explore. Pinhão is another town farther along the railway, and many vineyards sit away from stations. A valley stay needs more transport planning than a compact city break.
