Porto rewards a stay with time on both sides of the Douro. Walk the historic centre, leave an afternoon for Gaia or a museum, and use a separate day for the valley. Its compact centre still has steep climbs, especially between the river and the higher streets.

Keep the first walk near the centre
São Bento, the streets around Clérigos and the descent towards Ribeira can fill an easy first outing, with breaks for the hills. Decide whether to cross to Gaia at river level or from the upper bridge deck. A route drawn across the bridge may include a climb at either end.
A cellar visit in Gaia and a trip to vineyards in the Douro are different experiences. Book a tasting if you want the explanation and particular wines, then leave the rest of the afternoon for the waterfront. There is no need to order alcohol to enjoy the river walk.
Choose one longer visit
Serralves lies away from the historic core. The general ticket is €24 and the park-only option €15, so compare the current exhibitions and inclusions before setting aside time. Its resident free-entry arrangement is not a general free Sunday for every visitor.
Clérigos is more central. The €10 daytime tower and museum visit involves stairs; the separately advertised night or performance products have different conditions. If stairs do not suit you, make the nearby streets your stop instead.
Plan Campanhã and São Bento separately
Long-distance trains use Campanhã. Your final journey towards a central room may involve an urban train, metro or another transfer. Check that connection while booking, especially with luggage.
For day trips, choose one destination. Braga and Guimarães are not two stops on one direct rail line from Porto. The Douro guide explains why Régua and Pinhão need different timing.

Compare rooms in Cedofeita, Bonfim or near a useful metro stop. Ribeira puts you beside the water but may leave an uphill walk with bags. Ask about steps and noise before choosing a room for its view.
Getting Around
Andante fares depend on zones: Z2 is €1.40, Z3 €1.85 and Z4 €2.30 before the €0.60 card. CP trains to Braga, Guimarães and Aveiro have their own ticket choices; a city ticket is not a pass for every day trip.

A francesinha is a substantial sandwich with sauce and cheese. Read whether fries or an egg are included before adding sides. For a lighter meal, compare the day's soup and main dish instead of ordering a large plate for the low headline price.
Worth Paying For
Clérigos' standard daytime tower and museum ticket is €10. Serralves' €24 general ticket covers its listed spaces; the €15 park ticket is a different visit. Choose the place you want rather than buying both to fill a checklist.
Skip / Save Your Money
Skip a Douro excursion on a very short weekend if it would take your only full city day. A riverfront walk and a booked cellar visit in Gaia can suit that shorter stay, without pretending to be a vineyard trip.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
Check which deck of the Luís I Bridge your walking route uses. The upper deck and river-level crossing bring you to different heights, and a Gaia cellar tasting needs its own booking.
