Choosing your journey
A direct coach is the simpler connection. The rail alternative runs through Vigo and currently includes a replacement bus, so allow a substantial connection margin.

Start with the direct coach
Alsa’s Porto–Santiago service offers departures from Porto Campanhã or the airport, depending on the service. Santiago’s intermodal station is on Clara Campoamor. Allow roughly 3½–5 hours for a suitable direct coach, then add the walk or local bus to your room.
Understand the Celta replacement bus
CP’s current notice covers 6 April 2026 to 7 April 2027: Celta journeys use a replacement bus between Valença and Vigo Guixar. You travel by train from Porto, change to the bus, then arrange a separate Renfe connection towards Santiago. Some onward trains use Vigo Urzáiz, a different station from Guixar.
Leave room for the connection
This is not an uninterrupted Porto–Santiago train. Use the current CP and Renfe planners together and allow time for the bus arrival, any Vigo station transfer and the next departure. CP says the replacement bus is not wheelchair accessible and does not take pets; check its detailed conditions for packed bicycles or scooters before booking.
Use local times
Spain is one hour ahead of Portugal. A 04:00 Porto departure and an 08:30 Santiago arrival represent 3½ hours of travel. Keep that clock change in mind when comparing coach and rail options or arranging a pickup.

The Porto guide and Santiago de Compostela guide explain the local journeys, places to stay and visits. Add the main travel ticket separately to your daily spending plan. The distance above is a straight-line comparison between the city centres; your train, road or flight route can be longer.
Plan the Porto departure
If staying near Ribeira or São Bento, add the journey to Campanhã before the international connection. An airport coach stop is a different boarding point from the city terminal. Keep the full day clear for a rail connection through Valença and Vigo, and compare a direct coach if a shorter move matters more than the rail journey.
