Use the correct urban branch
Search CP for Guimarães, not Braga. A suitable urban train takes roughly 1¼–1½ hours from Porto, with the exact time depending on the departure. This is a different ticket choice from a reserved long-distance train. Validate the appropriate urban ticket before boarding.
Allow the station approach
The station sits outside the oldest central streets. Leave time to walk towards the squares, then climb to the palace and castle area. If staying overnight, confirm luggage storage before planning to go straight from the train to an interior visit.
Choose the open spaces
The palace and castle operator lists partial palace access during works and a closed castle keep. Check the areas included in the current €5 individual or €8 combined adult products. Penha is a separate hill outing, best added only when the return journey allows it.
