Guimarães is a comfortable choice for a historic-centre walk with time for a café and a few interiors. The castle and Palace of the Dukes sit above the central squares. Check their current access before deciding how much of the day to spend inside.

Walk before choosing every interior
Largo da Oliveira and the nearby squares give you a useful starting point. Follow the streets uphill towards the palace and castle, with time to sit down along the way. You can enjoy the historic setting without buying every available ticket.
If you stay overnight, use the evening for a meal in the centre. A short visit does not need to become a sequence of check-ins across northern Portugal; Guimarães can also work as a day trip from Porto.
Read the works notice before paying
The palace and castle ticket page describes partial palace access during works and a closed castle keep. It lists €5 for each standard adult ticket and €8 combined during this arrangement. Check the open areas rather than expecting the full usual visit.
This also helps with timing. A restricted interior may leave space for the streets and a longer lunch, while a temporary closure should not send you searching for an unofficial way inside.
Treat Penha as another outing
The hill above town needs its own weather and transport check. Do not add it automatically after the castle if you have an early return train. Check the cable-car operator's current hours if you plan to use it, including the last descent.
For arrival, use the Porto–Guimarães route. For a move to Braga, compare the bus connection rather than assuming the two urban rail branches join directly in the city centres.
Where to Stay
Choose a room near the historic centre if you want an evening without another transfer. The train station is outside the oldest streets, so check the approach with bags and whether your room is reached by stairs.
Getting Around
CP urban trains link Porto and Guimarães. Walking can cover the main central sights, but the climb to the castle area adds effort. Penha is a separate hill outing with its own transport and operating times.
Eating for Less
Read the posted lunch menu before ordering a shared dish. Ask whether the price is per portion or per person and choose the amount your group actually wants.

During the stated works, the palace and castle each list €5 adult admission, or €8 combined. Compare the areas open before buying; these prices describe the current restricted visit.
Skip / Save Your Money
Skip Penha on a short visit if it would leave you rushing the historic centre and the train home. It makes more sense as a separate half day when the weather and transport fit.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
The Palace of the Dukes has partial closures for works, and the castle keep is closed under the current visitor notice. A combined ticket does not mean every room or tower is accessible.
