Aveiro works well for a canal-side walk, a meal and time to look at the streets beyond the busiest boat stops. Costa Nova is a separate coastal outing. Choose whether you want both before setting a train home, rather than assuming the beach is beside the station.

Choose between a town stop and a coastal day
For a few hours, walk from the station towards the central canals, leave time for lunch and return without adding a distant beach. If you want Costa Nova, give the coast its own part of the day and check both directions of the onward bus or other transport.
The canal area is not the whole lagoon, and neither is the same setting as the Atlantic beach. Knowing which view you want helps avoid buying a trip that does something different.
Decide whether to take a boat
Read the duration, boarding point and language of the commentary before paying for a moliceiro ride. A later departure can leave you waiting instead of walking, so fit it around the train you actually intend to catch.
You can also spend the time on foot. Look at the buildings along the streets away from the main boarding area, stop for coffee and try a small local sweet if it appeals. There is no need to buy a large box simply because it is the best-known souvenir.
Check the bike and rail products
The current BUGA service uses an app, registration and payment. Do not plan around an old promise of free bicycles. Read the return-station and charging rules before starting, especially if you are considering a longer ride.
The Porto–Aveiro guide explains the train choices. CP urban and long-distance tickets have different conditions; choose the product shown for your actual departure rather than comparing the lowest number from another service.
Where to Stay
A central room is useful for an evening by the canals; a room near the station can simplify an early departure. Compare the actual walking route and luggage storage if you are only stopping between Porto and Coimbra.
Getting Around
CP trains serve Aveiro from Porto, with different urban and long-distance products. The canals are walkable from the centre. Costa Nova needs an onward journey, and current BUGA bike hire uses a paid app service.
Eating for Less
Try a small portion of ovos moles if you are curious about the local sweet, then choose an ordinary lunch nearby. A souvenir box and a single pastry are different purchases, so check the quantity and price.
Worth Paying For
A boat ride can be worthwhile if you want the canal perspective and commentary. Choose a clearly described trip, with a return time that leaves room for your train.
Skip / Save Your Money
Skip the coast on a short stop if it means spending most of the visit transferring. The town centre and a relaxed lunch can make a useful break in a longer rail journey.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
Check the departure point, duration and inclusions before buying a moliceiro trip. A canal cruise does not take you to Costa Nova, and a bike described in an old guide as free may belong to a different scheme.
