Funchal Travel Guide
Funchal is a useful Madeira base for gardens, the waterfront and meals between outdoor days. The mountain trails need their own bookings and transport. Keep the order flexible enough to use good weather for a hike and a cloudy day for the city.

Separate a city day from a mountain day
Start with the waterfront and old-town streets after arrival. Monte Palace can be the main visit on another day. Its visitor page lists €18 standard adult admission and several bus routes; the cable car is a separate purchase. Check the current operation of whichever journey you choose.
There is no need to walk down steep unfamiliar streets after a long garden visit. Plan the return bus or other transport before going up. Keep enough time for the actual entrance and slopes within the garden too.
Book the correct hiking route
Madeira's official hiking information explains the SIMplifica reservations and timed entry for listed PR trails. The ordinary individual fee is €4.50, while the full PR1 route costs €10.50. The shorter Pedra Rija return is a different €4.50 option and does not take you all the way to Pico Ruivo.
On the full PR1 route, the section from Pedra Rija towards Pico Ruivo follows a one-way arrangement. Arrange the exit journey as carefully as the start. Check current trail status, weather and the precise booking conditions before committing to transport.
Choose your airport stop
The Aerobus information distinguishes central stops from the Lido and Praia Formosa area. The published map gives approximate travel times, so add waiting and the final walk to your room. Check the current fare with the operator before boarding.
Our Madeira itinerary leaves the outdoor day movable. A city or garden alternative is useful when the mountain forecast does not support the walk you hoped to do.
Where to Stay
Compare a central room with a Lido-area stay using the exact bus stop and slope. A property described as close to Funchal may sit well above the waterfront. Ask about stairs and the final walk if hills are a concern.
Getting Around
The airport Aerobus has different stops for the centre, Lido and Praia Formosa. Check the stop nearest your room. City and regional buses do not automatically reach the start and finish of every mountain trail.

€5.55The operator map gives about 22 minutes to Mercado, 24 to Avenida do Mar, 38 to Lido and 50 to Praia Formosa, before waiting and walking. The published prepaid adult Aerobus ticket costs €5.55 per trip; a new GIRO ticket card costs €0.50 separately. The ordinary adult ticket is €6.70. Choose the stop near your room and check the dated timetable and purchase arrangements; buses do not run on 25 December.

Read the displayed unit before buying fruit or ordering fish. Ask for the total for the amount you want. A market visit can be enjoyable without buying a large tasting selection or treating one stall's offer as a city-wide price.
Worth Paying For
Monte Palace's standard adult garden ticket is €18, with the cable car separate. For hiking, Madeira's listed PR trails use advance time-slot bookings; the standard fee and PR1's full-route product are different.
Skip / Save Your Money
Skip a steep walk down from Monte if the route does not suit you. A bus or other planned return lets you spend your energy in the garden instead of navigating an unfamiliar descent.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
A trail shown as open still needs the applicable booking and suitable conditions. Do not reserve a one-way hike without arranging transport from its finish, or assume a city bus ticket covers the trailhead transfer.
