Start with one side of the centre
For a first afternoon, walk from Praça do Comércio into Baixa, then choose either Alfama or Chiado. Crossing repeatedly between the hills adds more effort than the map suggests. In Alfama, leave time for small streets and a viewpoint instead of treating every church and terrace as a separate appointment.
Belém sits farther along the river. Give it its own half day or longer if you book an interior. Check the individual attraction's current calendar before travelling there; a neighbourhood visit and entry to a monument are different plans.
Buy a ticket for your actual journeys
Metro Lisboa lists a €1.90 Carris/Metro ticket and €1.72 metro zapping fare. Contactless bank-card entry on the metro is a different €1.92 product, with one person per card or device. Stored credit is charged according to the operator, so changing from metro to CP is not one continuous flat-price ride.
The €7.25 Carris/Metro 24-hour ticket can help on a day with several rides. The €11.40 version adds the listed CP urban lines, including Sintra and Cascais. Compare the full day before buying it, and add the occasional card cost where needed.
Leave space for an evening near your room
Choose dinner within a comfortable walk or one simple ride home. In a hilly city, a room that looks central can still involve a steep final climb. Ask about stairs inside older buildings if that affects your stay.
The Carmo museum and a nearby street walk make a manageable paid-and-free combination. For another day, use the Sintra route to choose your palace ticket and approach before leaving Lisbon.

A Carris/Metro single is €1.90; metro zapping costs €1.72 per separately charged journey, and the Carris/Metro 24-hour ticket is €7.25. CP trains use different fares. Each traveller needs their own valid card or ticket.

Worth Paying For
Carmo's archaeological museum costs €7 for a standard adult visit and is closed on Sundays. It can make a focused stop around Chiado without filling the whole day with paid interiors.
Skip / Save Your Money
Walk through the higher streets around Carmo if you want that neighbourhood. This does not guarantee free access to a lift platform. Public viewpoints such as Santa Luzia offer a different outdoor stop.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
Do not build a timed visit around getting straight onto a busy historic tram. Use the journey planner for another route, and check the operator's lift notices before travelling specifically for Santa Justa.
