Many first-time travelers are surprised at hotel or hostel check-in when asked to pay an additional cash fee or card surcharge that was not charged when booking online. This is the municipal tourist tax (known as Taxa Turística in Portugal, Tasa Turística in Spain, and Kurtaxe/Bettensteuer in Germany and Austria).

Why Online Platforms Don’t Always Charge It

Under European municipal regulations, tourist taxes must be collected directly by the local accommodation provider and remitted to the municipal government. Major booking platforms like Booking.com often clearly state: 'Excluded from total: €2.00 city tax per person per night'.

Current 2026 Tourist Taxes by City

• Lisbon: €2.00 to €4.00 per person per night (capped at 7 consecutive nights).
• Porto: €2.00 to €3.00 per person per night.
• Barcelona: Combined Catalan regional and municipal surcharge totaling roughly €4.50 to €6.00 per person per night.
• Berlin: City hotel tax of 5% of the net room rate (often included in room price).
• Prague: 50 CZK (~€2.00) per person per night. Always budget an extra €2 to €5 per person per night for local municipal fees.
