Unlike North American or Asian hotels where central air conditioning is standard, many European hotels and hostels operate inside protected historic buildings constructed centuries before electrical ducting existed.

Key Rules for Booking in July and August

1. Filter strictly by 'Air Conditioning': On Booking.com or Hostelworld, never assume a property has A/C. Many listings provide only a small desk fan. In Madrid, Seville, or Granada, where summer afternoon temperatures regularly exceed 38°C (100°F), a desk fan is completely inadequate.
2. Verify Individual Room Controls: Some older properties have central chillers that are only turned on during specific hours of the day. Read reviews for phrases like 'room was boiling' or 'air conditioning was locked'.
3. Keep Window Shutters Closed: Follow the Mediterranean tradition: close heavy wooden window shutters and curtains during daylight hours to block direct solar radiation, opening windows only after dusk when ambient temperatures drop.
