How to check hotel air conditioning before a summer trip
Find out what “air conditioning” means for your booked room, including operating hours, window access, noise and useful questions for the hotel.
Before booking a summer room, confirm how that room is cooled. A building-wide air-conditioning symbol does not tell you whether the bedroom has its own unit, whether you can adjust it or whether it runs overnight.
This matters in budget hotels as well as hostels and apartments. Even within one chain, facilities can differ. Premier Inn’s room information, for example, tells guests to check the individual hotel because not all rooms have air conditioning.
Ask about the room you are buying
Send the property a short, specific message:
Does the room category I am booking have working air conditioning during my stay? Can I control it in the room, and does it operate overnight? Are there any additional charges?
If a fan is offered instead, decide whether that meets your needs. A fan and an air-conditioning unit do different jobs; the listing should not leave you guessing.
For an apartment, ask whether cooling reaches every bedroom. A unit in the sitting room may not cool a separate bedroom with its door closed.
Look beyond the equipment list
Room position can affect comfort. Ask about a top-floor or attic room, direct afternoon sun and whether shutters or blinds are available. These details are especially useful when photographs make a bright room look appealing without showing its ventilation.
Read recent reviews from the warmer months. Look for repeated descriptions of the same issue, such as a noisy unit or controls that guests could not change. One vague complaint is less useful than several clear accounts of the same room category.
Also check whether the windows open and what is outside them. Traffic, a bar terrace or a kitchen extractor may make an open-window night less attractive.
Keep the booking details
Save the room description and the hotel’s reply with your confirmation. If cooling is essential for your stay, choose a property that answers clearly and consider a flexible rate while you finalise the trip.
On arrival, try the controls before settling in. If something is wrong, speak to reception while there is time to inspect the unit or discuss another room.
