Does booking directly with a hotel save money?
Compare a hotel’s own offer with a booking platform, including room type, taxes, breakfast and cancellation terms, before choosing.
Booking directly with a hotel can be worthwhile, but there is no automatic 10% or 15% saving. Sometimes the hotel has a better rate. Sometimes a platform discount is lower. Occasionally the prices match and the difference is breakfast or flexibility.
Compare the offer itself, not the booking channel’s reputation.
Put the two prices on equal terms
Use the same dates, guests and room category. Check whether both offers include taxes, breakfast and any extra bed. A smaller room with a non-refundable rate is not a fair comparison with a larger refundable one.
Look at payment timing too. “Pay later” does not necessarily mean you can cancel without a charge. Read the actual deadline and penalty.
For date-specific hotel bookings, the EU’s usual 14-day cooling-off right does not apply. The Your Europe guidance explains this exception. Keep the cancellation terms that apply to your reservation.
Ask for a complete quote
If you have found a property you like, a message can be enough:
I am looking for a room for two adults from 12 to 15 October. Could you send your total direct-booking price for three nights, including taxes, and confirm the room type, breakfast and cancellation deadline?
Replace the dates and guests with your own. You can mention a public competing offer, but do not assume the hotel has to match it.
Use contact details from the property’s established website. If payment instructions arrive unexpectedly or change, verify them through that known contact route before acting.
Value extras at what you would pay
Breakfast is only a saving if you want it. A late checkout is useful if it fits your departure. A room upgrade is harder to value unless the category and availability are confirmed.
For example, a €300 direct offer with breakfast may suit you better than a €285 room-only offer if you would otherwise spend €10 each morning. These are illustrative figures, not a current hotel quote.
Before cancelling an existing booking, make sure the replacement is confirmed and the old reservation can still be cancelled on acceptable terms.
