Take the urban train, then allow a separate journey to your chosen monument. Keep the same Lisbon room for a day trip and book the palace slot with the uphill approach in mind.

Start at the right station

Rossio is a useful starting point for the direct Sintra urban service. Allow roughly 40–50 minutes on the train, plus waiting. Other Lisbon starting points can have different services, so check CP rather than assuming every train from the city ends at Sintra.

Choose the rail fare

The 2026 urban fare table lists €5.10 for a Lisbon–Sintra return, or €2.55 for the four-zone single. CP zapping is a separate €2.05-per-journey option, and an occasional card can add €0.50. The €11.40 Carris/Metro/CP 24-hour product can suit a day with additional city rides. Validate the appropriate ticket before boarding.

Leave time after the train

Sintra station is not Pena Palace. Choose the bus or marked walking approach, then add the time inside the park before a palace appointment. Pena tickets and Regaleira tickets are separate purchases. One main visit and lunch can make a comfortable day.

Plan the arrival

The Lisbon guide and Sintra guide explain the local journeys, places to stay and visits. Add the main travel ticket separately to your daily spending plan. The distance above is a straight-line comparison between the city centres; your train, road or flight route can be longer.
