Coimbra is worth an overnight stop if you want more than a quick look at the university. Give the upper town a morning, then slow down by the Mondego or in the lower streets. The climb between them is part of the visit, so keep your luggage journey simple.

Put the upper town first
Book the university visit you actually want. The official ticket list separates the €16.50 library, university and science museum combination from the €12.50 visit without the library. The library has a reserved entry time; the other included spaces follow their own access arrangements.
Walk uphill with enough time to find the entrance and rest before the slot. A long train journey followed immediately by a library appointment is an awkward start, especially with bags. Staying overnight lets you visit after a calmer morning.
Leave an afternoon for the lower town
Come down towards the Santa Cruz area and choose somewhere for lunch. Afterwards, walk a manageable stretch beside the Mondego. You do not need to cross every bridge or add every museum to make the stop worthwhile.
If rain arrives, choose an indoor visit whose opening day fits rather than trying to complete a long outdoor circuit. A university ticket is not admission to every museum in Coimbra.
Allow for the station connection
CP's Coimbra information shows the changed arrangement for central travel. Coimbra-B remains the long-distance station; Metro Mondego buses provide the central connection described by CP. Check the boarding point and fare instead of following old advice about a free shuttle train to Coimbra-A.

Where to Stay
A room in the lower town can make arrival and meals easier, while the upper streets put you closer to the university. Check the actual slope and any stairs. For one night, a practical bag drop matters more than a long list of hotel facilities.
Getting Around
Long-distance trains stop at Coimbra-B. CP's current information directs central connections to Metro Mondego buses; do not expect the old Coimbra-A shuttle train. Check the current stop and ticket before leaving the main station.
Eating for Less
Look for a lunch menu in the lower town and read which courses are included. Student surroundings do not guarantee one fixed cheap meal, and a riverside table can be a different offer from a takeaway lunch.
Worth Paying For
The university's library, university and science museum product costs €16.50 for a standard adult. The €12.50 product leaves out the library. Choose the library time if that is the part you most want to see.
Skip / Save Your Money
Skip a rushed day trip to a distant monastery during a short Coimbra stay. The university, Santa Cruz area and a riverside walk already give the day a clear shape.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
Do not reserve the library for shortly after your train arrives. The station transfer, bag drop and uphill approach all need time, even when the city looks small on a map.
