Cascais Travel Guide

Cascais is an easy place to slow down after Lisbon: choose a town beach, walk past the citadel and leave time for the coast around Boca do Inferno. Guincho is a different, farther outing. A day here works best when you do not try to collect every beach.

Example spending plans

Use these room and meal budgets to plan a day. They are spending choices, not average prices or available room offers. Replace the room amount with your full booking price, including tax. If sharing, divide only the private-room cost. Airport and intercity travel are extra.

These are separate spending choices, not price or quality rankings. The alternative plan may have a lower total when its room, meal or activity allowances differ.

Start close to the station

Walk through the centre and decide whether to stay by the town beaches or continue towards the citadel and Marechal Carmona park. This keeps the first part of the day flexible. You can stop for lunch without needing another transfer back across town.

Boca do Inferno is a separate coastal stop beyond the central streets. Use the signed public route and barriers, especially in rough weather. A dramatic sea view is a reason to keep a sensible distance from the edge.

Keep Guincho as another choice

Guincho lies farther along the exposed coast. Look up the bus, cycling route or other transport before heading there, including the return. Wind and sea conditions can make it a very different beach day from a sheltered town setting.

For a short outing from Lisbon, there is no need to add it simply because it appears on a list. A town beach, park and lunch can fill the time comfortably.

Check the train works notice

The CP fare table lists a €5.10 return from Lisbon to Cascais. Use the current works notice as well: some departures involve a replacement bus on part of the line.

Keep Lisbon as your overnight base for a day trip, and leave margin before a later booking in the city. The Lisbon–Cascais route explains the stations and ticket choices.

Where to Stay

Stay near the station and centre for a visit without a car, or compare a coastal room after checking its bus and walking access. A sea view farther west can mean a longer journey to meals and trains.

Getting Around

CP lists Lisbon–Cascais return travel at €5.10, with the card separate where needed. Trains leave Cais do Sodré. Engineering work can replace part of the route with buses, especially on evening and weekend departures.

Eating for Less

Read the menus around the centre before choosing a table. A beach snack and a full fish lunch serve different needs, so compare portions and included extras instead of assuming the waterfront always costs one amount.

Worth Paying For

Paying for a museum or a relaxed meal can make sense on a windy day. For outdoor time, the citadel surroundings, Marechal Carmona park and the route towards Boca do Inferno give you choices without booking a full-day tour.

Skip / Save Your Money

Skip a rushed Guincho detour if you mainly want a gentle beach afternoon. Staying near the town lets you change the plan easily when the wind or water conditions are less appealing.

Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes

Do not confuse a train to Cascais with transport to Guincho. The town beaches are close to the centre; the exposed coast farther west needs a separate route and return plan.
