Put the old town into a simple order
Start around Praça do Giraldo and walk towards the cathedral and Roman Temple. Keep São Francisco and the Chapel of Bones for another part of the day, with a proper lunch between them. The official Évora introduction helps place these separate sights.
Looking at an exterior and entering a monument are different visits. Check the opening day and ticket for each interior before deciding how many to include. A compact map does not remove the time spent inside.
Let the afternoon fit the weather
During hot conditions, put the longer outdoor stretch earlier and keep a room or shaded meal stop within reach. Ask about cooling before booking accommodation. Walking every street in the middle of the day is unlikely to improve the visit.
An overnight stay gives you the evening after the busiest daytime period. If you are coming only for the day, choose a return that leaves room for a seated meal rather than treating lunch as something to eat while rushing to the station.
Keep countryside plans separate
A vineyard visit or megalithic site outside Évora requires more than a city walking route. Confirm the appointment, access and return transport before adding it. A hire car can help for those specific plans, but is not necessary for every visit to the walled centre.

Trains and coaches connect Évora with Lisbon, using different arrival points. Check the walk from your chosen station to the room. The historic centre suits walking, while countryside wineries and megalithic sites need a separate transport plan.
Eating for Less
Read the Alentejo dishes on the menu and ask about the size of a portion. A slow cooked meal can be a good main event for the day, but a regional label does not guarantee a set low price.
Worth Paying For
The Chapel of Bones inside São Francisco can be a worthwhile focused visit if its subject interests you. Check the church's current visitor arrangements and pair it with time in the surrounding centre.
Skip / Save Your Money
Leave out a countryside excursion if you have only one short day in Évora. The transport and appointment can take much of the time you meant to spend in town.
