Walking in the Cinque Terre in spring or autumn
Check the exact trail before buying a card, and keep trains and village visits as alternatives when weather closes a route.
April and October can suit a Cinque Terre walking trip, but neither month guarantees open trails or quiet villages. Choose a route you can manage, check its status close to departure and keep another way to spend the day.
Start with the trail report
The national park website publishes weather alerts and route notices. Look up each section you intend to walk. An open path between two villages does not mean the whole coastal route is open, and a higher alternative may involve much more climbing.
After heavy rain, paths can remain slippery or closed even when the sun returns. Follow barriers and staff advice. The park's walking programme also stresses that these trails have mountain-like demands and require appropriate footwear. Beach sandals are a poor choice for steps and uneven ground.
Buy the card that fits the day
The Trekking Card costs €10 for an adult day or €15 on peak dates. It includes the listed paid paths and local village buses, but not regional trains. The 2026 Train Card adds the covered regional trains and costs €22, €29.50 or €35 for an adult day in the main-season date bands. Both end at midnight. Via dell’Amore is included but needs a reserved slot; buy the card and book that time rather than paying for an unnecessary extra product.
If you will walk only one section and use few trains, compare the individual costs with the pass. If the weather changes, know which parts of the purchase you can still use.
Leave room for a village day
Choose a base with a useful train connection and check the last return. One open walk, a meal and time in a village can make a full day. You do not have to connect all five places on foot to enjoy the coast.
