Amalfi Coast or Cinque Terre without a car?
Choose between a coast linked by buses and ferries and a smaller group of villages connected by rail.
Choose Cinque Terre if short rail hops between villages are central to your plan. Choose the Amalfi Coast if you want more time in one coastal base with selected bus or ferry outings. Both can work without a car, but they ask for different kinds of planning.
Neither is automatically a cheap choice. Compare accommodation for the same dates and number of people before deciding that one region fits your budget better.
Cinque Terre is built around the rail link
The five villages sit on the regional railway between La Spezia and Levanto. Staying near that line makes moving around straightforward, although stairs and steep paths can still make luggage awkward.
Check the Cinque Terre Train Card against the individual journeys and trail access you intend to use. Select the actual date to see the price and coverage. A card is not always the cheaper choice for someone making only one short outing.
Trail access can change. Use the park's current notices before walking, and check reservation requirements for Via dell'Amore. Do not assume every coastal path is open simply because the trains are running.
The Amalfi Coast needs more timetable planning
Amalfi and Positano do not have the same village-to-village railway setup. You will use road transport, ferries or a combination. Travelmar provides seasonal sailings along the coast, so check the date and port before building a day around one.
Its 2026 fares list a standard Salerno–Amalfi single at €12 and Salerno–Positano at €17. Those examples show how several boat rides can add up. They do not include your accommodation transfer or every company's route.
A base in Salerno can make rail arrival convenient; a room in a coastal town may reduce daily travel once you are there. Compare the total and the amount of time you want to spend moving.
Let the pace decide
For a short trip, choose a few places and leave time to sit by the water. Packing all the famous villages into one day makes either coast feel like a transport exercise.

Compare like-for-like travel days
In the Cinque Terre, the 2026 Train Card includes Via dell’Amore, but you still need to reserve its slot. On the Amalfi Coast, check the exact ferry ports and hilltop connections. Neither destination is well compared by counting only hotel nights and ignoring the day’s transport.
