Zurich or Geneva for a short Swiss stay?

Let your onward route help decide, then compare the museums, neighbourhoods and lake walks you would enjoy in each city.

On this page

Zurich and Geneva both work for a short city stay, but they sit at different ends of many Swiss itineraries. Before choosing by hotel price, check where you are arriving and where you will go next. An extra cross-country journey can use time you hoped to spend exploring.

A day in Zurich

Walk through the old town on both sides of the Limmat, then continue towards the lake if the weather is good. The Zurich old-town guide helps you place the main streets and churches without treating every stop as a paid visit.

For art, look at the Kunsthaus programme and choose the collections or exhibition that interests you. Leave the rest of the afternoon open for a neighbourhood walk or a café instead of adding a mountain trip simply because it appears on a day-tour menu.

A day in Geneva

Start with the lakefront, then explore the old town if the climb suits you. The Geneva attractions guide is useful for locating the Jet d'Eau, parks and museums. The fountain's operation depends on conditions, so it should be one stop in the day rather than its only purpose.

If an international organisation or a science visit is your main interest, check the particular visitor programme before booking. A public exhibition, guided tour and access to a working facility are different things.

Compare the journeys you will actually make

Use SBB to compare airport-to-hotel travel and the next day's connection. Include the right station and the walk with luggage. Both cities can be expensive, so compare the same room conditions and cancellation terms rather than assuming one is always the budget choice.

For a wider trip, Lucerne or Interlaken may be a more useful next decision than adding a second large city. Choose a route with enough time to enjoy each stop.

Compare the local arrival benefit

Geneva’s qualifying accommodation can provide a card covering local zone 10, including the airport-to-Cornavin train once the card is valid. Ask for the digital arrangement before arriving. Zurich’s airport journey uses the appropriate ZVV zones; do not assume an ordinary Zurich room supplies the same benefit.

Read the Zurich guide and Geneva guide with your next destination beside them. Lucerne is a different onward choice from Lausanne or Montreux, and crossing the country just to save a small amount on one room may use most of a day.
