Geneva rewards a slower visit around the lake, old town and neighbourhoods beyond the waterfront. Choose one major museum or science visit, then use local transport to connect the areas instead of walking back across the city repeatedly.

Divide the city into manageable visits
Spend one half-day around the old town and the lake, then choose Carouge, a museum or an international-district visit for the other half. These places are spread out enough that a tram ride can save energy for the visit itself.
Paquis works well for an evening by the water. Plainpalais is a useful alternative when your plans lie south of the centre. Compare the walking route from the station to a room, not just its distance on a booking map.
Arrange the guest card before your flight
Eligible Geneva accommodation can provide a digital Geneva Transport Card. Its local coverage is UNIRESO zone 10, including the airport-to-city train journey. Ask your host how to receive and activate it before travelling.
Without valid coverage, the airport lists an adult CHF 3 zone 10 ticket for the train to Cornavin. The ride takes about seven minutes; walking through the terminal and reaching your hotel take additional time. See the airport's train information.
A stay in Annemasse can still suit your budget, but do not count on a Geneva accommodation benefit there. Price the cross-border journey and the late return you will use.
Choose the right kind of boat trip
The yellow Mouettes are short public-transport crossings within the local network. They work well when you want to reach the other bank or spend a little time on the water. They do not replace a longer cruise if that longer journey is what you want to experience.
The Jet d'Eau is an outdoor stop rather than a timed attraction. Its operation depends on conditions. Leave the lakeside walk flexible so a windy day does not decide the whole visit.
Plan CERN as a separate outing
CERN Science Gateway's public exhibitions are free. For individual visitors, guided tours require on-site registration subject to availability, so check CERN's visit page before setting out. Do not assume a free exhibition visit includes access to an accelerator or a reserved guided tour.
For the UN or another scheduled visit, follow the institution's current identification and entry instructions. Keep the required document accessible rather than in luggage stored elsewhere.
Continue along the lake
Lausanne makes an easy next base by train. If you have an early flight home, compare returning to Geneva the evening before with the actual first connection from your final stop.

Choose the Red Cross museum or a UN visit if the subject interests you, allowing for booking and access requirements. CERN's public exhibitions offer a separate free option.

Skip a paid sightseeing cruise if a short crossing and a lakefront walk are enough for your day.
