Lausanne has two different rhythms: the upper town around the cathedral and the lakeside at Ouchy. Use the metro between them, and give a museum or a Lavaux outing its own part of the day.

Visit the upper town and lake as separate blocks
Walk around the cathedral and old-town streets first, then use the m2 towards Ouchy when you are ready for the water. Doing this in blocks avoids repeating the same uphill journey. A room's height above the lake matters when judging its walking distance.
If you arrive late, start with the area around your accommodation. You do not need to fit the cathedral and the entire waterfront into the first evening.
Use your local card before buying another pass
Eligible accommodation supplies the Lausanne Transport Card. The published coverage includes Mobilis zones 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 in second class, with a maximum validity of 15 days. Confirm the arrangement with your host.
Look up the endpoint of a day trip on the validity map. A journey to a nearby vineyard stop may be covered while a longer trip towards Montreux needs another ticket. Boat travel has its own conditions.
Give the Olympic Museum a proper visit
The Olympic Museum is near Ouchy, so combine it with a lakeside walk rather than an upper-town appointment immediately afterwards. The ordinary adult all-exhibitions ticket is CHF 20. The 2026 Lausanne card leaflet lists a CHF 16 offer; use the correct ticket category and bring the card.
The gardens and the indoor exhibition are different parts of the outing. If only one person in your group wants the museum, arrange a clear meeting place afterwards instead of buying unwanted tickets for everyone.
Make a manageable Lavaux outing
Choose a starting station such as Cully, then select a signed walk that suits your time and ability. Vineyard paths can involve slopes, exposed sun and sections near roads. Carry water, stay on public paths and do not walk through working rows of vines.
A tasting is a separate booked or paid activity, not an automatic inclusion with a walk. Check its opening time before building the day around it. Save a return train from your intended endpoint so you can shorten the walk if needed.
Continue without backtracking
Geneva lies in one direction and Montreux in the other. If you are moving along the lake, choose visits near that day's route and leave time to collect luggage.

The m2 links the lake, station area and upper city. The Lausanne Transport Card covers its published Mobilis zones for eligible accommodation guests; it is not a pass for the whole lake region.
Eating for Less
Buy a picnic before heading into the vineyards or along the shore. For a sit-down meal, compare the lunch menu around your actual route instead of walking across town for a small saving.
Worth Paying For
The Olympic Museum suits visitors interested in the Games, sport and design. Its standard adult ticket is CHF 20; check eligible card reductions before buying.
Skip / Save Your Money
Skip a packaged vineyard excursion if you prefer an independent walk, but still plan the train, terrain and return connection.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
The lakeside is well below the old town. Use the metro for the climb when needed, and check whether any Lavaux journey stays inside your card's area.
