Walking to Riffelsee from Rotenboden
Use the Gornergrat railway for access, then choose between a short lake visit and the longer marked walk down to Riffelberg.
Riffelsee is close to Rotenboden station on the Gornergrat railway, but it is still a mountain outing. The lake sits high above Zermatt, and a short walk can involve cold wind, uneven ground or lingering snow. Check conditions before buying a ticket for a walking plan.
Choose how much walking you want
A visit to the lake followed by a return to Rotenboden is different from continuing downhill to Riffelberg. The railway's Riffelsee trail guide describes the longer outing as about 3.1 km and one hour of walking. Allow extra time for photographs and rests.
Use Zermatt's Riffelseeweg route page for the marked trail and current information. The route runs from Rotenboden through Riffelsee to Riffelberg. It is not a paved lakeside promenade, and a general summer description does not confirm that it is open on your travel date.
For a first visit, decide whether the Gornergrat summit is also part of your day. You might ride to the top first, then return to Rotenboden to start walking. Check ticket coverage for every leg rather than assuming the cheapest return fare allows your preferred stops.
Plan around conditions, not a photograph
A clear view of the Matterhorn needs visibility, and its reflection needs reasonably still water. Going early can help you build a quieter schedule, but it cannot guarantee either. Cloud or wind may arrive before you do.
Wear shoes with grip and bring sun protection as well as a warm layer. If the path is snowy or visibility is poor, ask railway staff about a suitable alternative. Do not follow tracks away from the marked route just because other visitors have done so.

Choose the railway product after the walk
Use the Gornergrat fare table to compare your actual station combination. The full adult Zermatt–Gornergrat return is CHF 132 in May–October 2026; that is a different product from a discounted or one-way ticket to Rotenboden. Do not add a summit fare if you have no plan to go there.
