A Rigi round trip from Lucerne by boat and train

Combine a lake crossing with the mountain railway, then check whether your return uses the same route or the cable car to Weggis.

On this page

A Rigi trip works well as a full day from Lucerne. The usual loop crosses the lake to Vitznau, climbs by cogwheel train to Rigi Kulm and returns through Rigi Kaltbad and Weggis. You can also go back through Vitznau if the cable car connection does not suit your day.

The lake operator's Rigi round-trip page gives a minimum duration of five and a half hours. Treat that as a transport and visit framework, not a reason to rush lunch or a walk into a narrow gap.

Trace every part of the ticket

Journey What to check
Lucerne to Vitznau Boat departure, class and fare coverage
Vitznau to Rigi Kulm Cogwheel railway connection and mountain weather
Rigi Kulm to Rigi Kaltbad Train time if returning through Weggis
Rigi Kaltbad to Weggis Cable car operation and the onward walk to the pier
Weggis to Lucerne A boat that leaves enough transfer time

A plain Rigi day pass and a combined boat package are different products. The Rigi ticket page lists the mountain lines included in its day ticket and Swiss Travel Pass validity. For the boat, confirm coverage and class with the lake operator. A Swiss Half Fare Card provides the applicable discount, not unlimited free travel.

Leave the summit plan flexible

Check webcams and the day's transport notices before departure. Low cloud can hide the view even when boats and trains run normally. A shorter visit with time by the lake may be more enjoyable than waiting for hours in mist.

Wear suitable shoes if you add a walk. Keep to an open route that fits the season, and do not turn a missed connection into a hurried descent. The cable car's lower station and the Weggis landing stage are separate places, so include the walk between them.

Still choosing a base? See Lucerne or Interlaken for the difference between a lake-and-city stay and a trip centred on the Bernese Oberland.

The mountain ticket and the city guest card

Rigi Bahnen’s current fare page lists its adult day ticket at CHF 84 from June 2026. The ticket covers the named Rigi Bahnen lines. It is not automatically a boat ticket or admission to a spa.

The free Lucerne accommodation visitor card is a different product with local transport and selected discounts. Read the card name before comparing it with a Swiss Travel Pass. Our Lucerne guide sets out that distinction and a simple town-day alternative.
