Lucerne gives you a compact old town, a lakefront beside the railway station and several ways into the mountains. One town day and one flexible excursion day make a more comfortable start than booking a different summit every morning.

Keep the first day in town
Start with Chapel Bridge and the riverside lanes, then walk towards the Lion Monument. Crossing the bridge is free; that does not promise public access inside the Water Tower. Leave the afternoon for a museum or a longer waterfront walk according to the weather.
If you arrive with bags, settle them at your accommodation or a suitable storage facility before exploring. The railway station and main lake piers sit close together, but a boat connection still needs time for finding the right pier and boarding.
Know which card you have
The accommodation visitor-card benefits cover local transport in zone 10 and selected discounts. Boats are excluded from its free local transport. Ask the host to explain any arrival entitlement and coverage outside the city.
A Swiss Travel Pass is a separate paid product. Compare it against your whole route, not just one day in Lucerne.
Build a Rigi day around the return journey
A common approach combines a boat to Vitznau with the railway towards Rigi Kulm. Another approach uses the railway from Arth-Goldau. You can travel out one way and return another if your tickets cover both.
Rigi Bahnen's current tariff lists its adult day ticket at CHF 84 from June 2026. A valid Swiss Travel Pass includes the named Rigi Bahnen routes; other cable-car companies on the mountain can have different rules. Check the lake operator's timetable and ticket coverage separately before choosing a boat connection.
Save the last practical descent, not only the final mountain train. You still need a boat, bus or train afterwards. In poor visibility, a shorter lake outing can be a better use of the day than paying specifically for a summit view.
Leave the next transfer unhurried
The Lucerne to Interlaken railway is part of the scenery, so it can be your main activity on a moving day. Avoid adding an early summit trip that leaves you rushing back for luggage and the onward train.

Compare the station side for early departures with the old town for evening walks. Ask whether the accommodation issues the Lucerne Visitor Card and whether its local zone covers the property.
Getting Around
The centre is easy to walk. The visitor card covers eligible local transport in zone 10, but lake boats are not included in that local benefit.
Eating for Less
Buy a picnic before a boat or mountain trip. In town, compare bakery lunches, supermarket counters and self-service restaurants with their prices visible.
Worth Paying For
Rigi is worth considering if you want a mountain railway and lake combination. Rigi Bahnen coverage with a Swiss Travel Pass can make it a useful choice, subject to the actual route and operating day.
Skip / Save Your Money
Skip a second summit ticket when you would rather spend that time in town or beside the lake. Choose Pilatus or Rigi for the experience you want, not just a pass discount.
