Cycling around Lake Annecy at your own pace
Choose a short ride on the western greenway or prepare for the full lake circuit, which includes hills and some shared roads.
You do not have to ride all the way around Lake Annecy to enjoy cycling there. A short out-and-back ride on the western greenway is a good choice if you want an easy afternoon, frequent stops or a route you can shorten. The full circuit needs more time and confidence.
The greenway and the full loop are different
The Lake Annecy Tourist Office describes the western greenway from Annecy towards Marlens as a 33 km route. That is not the distance around the lake. Its full lake circuit is listed at about 40 km, with more climbing on the eastern side and some village sections shared with vehicles.
Around Talloires, the change in height is noticeable. Riding in the opposite direction changes a climb into a descent, but it does not remove the need to control your speed. An electric bike can help uphill without making road sections or busy paths effortless.
Use the official cycle maps to choose the route. Avoid accidentally following a sporting route over the mountain passes when you intended the lakeside circuit.
Choose a useful turnaround point
For a shorter ride, head along the western shore and turn back while you still feel fresh. Leave time for a beach or café stop if that is part of the day. Do not judge the ride only by a fast cyclist's moving time.
When renting, ask about bike fit, a helmet, lights where needed, a lock and what to do if something goes wrong. Check the return deadline before you leave. Families should choose the route around the least confident rider, especially where the path meets traffic.
The greenway is shared with other users. Slow down near walkers, children and junctions, and move off the riding line before taking photographs. Carry water and weather protection, since a pleasant morning can become a wet return.
