A Lake Como day around Varenna

Varenna is a useful place to begin a car-free Lake Como visit because the railway, village and ferry landing are close enough to connect on foot. They are not at the same point, though, and the streets have slopes. Keep your luggage light and give yourself time to find the landing stage.

Start with Varenna itself

Walk down towards the water, then leave the busiest arrival area to explore the village streets. A lakeside café stop and time to look around can be part of the visit, not just the gap before the next ferry.

Continue to Villa Monastero if the garden interests you. Its botanical garden and house museum have different opening patterns. Adult garden admission is €13. The house-museum combination costs more and can have different opening days. Choose the product for the areas you want rather than assuming every garden ticket includes the house.

Garden paths, steps and the approach may matter for mobility. Read the visitor information before paying if you need a route without stairs.

Add one ferry destination

Use Navigazione Laghi for the day's departures and service notices. Bellagio or Menaggio can make a reasonable additional stop, but there is no need to visit both just because the boats connect them.

Read the coverage of any circulation or day ticket carefully. It may apply to a defined area and service type rather than every boat on Lake Como. Leave time to queue, find the correct pier and return to Varenna before your train. The last boat that appears to connect may leave too little room for a delay.

If the lake is rough or services change, stay in Varenna and shorten the day. A good village and garden visit is better than a stressful chase around three towns.
