The Classic 3-Day Accursed Mountains Loop

The trek connecting Valbona and Theth via the dramatic Koman Lake passenger ferry is one of Europe's greatest budget mountain adventures.

The Standard Loop Strategy

  • Day 1: 06:30 AM minibus from Shkodër to Koman port (€8). Board the 09:00 AM passenger ferry (Berisha or Dragobia) through the steep fjord-like limestone canyon of Lake Koman to Fierza (€8, 2.5 hours). Minibus from Fierza to Valbona village (€6). Overnight in a traditional mountain guesthouse.
  • Day 2: Hike the Valbona Pass (Qafa e Valbonës) to Theth. The trail covers 15 kilometers, ascends 800 meters, and takes 6 to 7 hours. The pass provides jaw-dropping vistas over the Accursed Mountains. Descend into the stone village of Theth. Overnight in Theth.
  • Day 3: Visit the Theth stone lock-in tower (Kulla) and Grunas waterfall. Take the 13:00 PM minibus from Theth across the paved mountain road back to Shkodër (€10 to €12, 2 hours).

Luggage Logistics

Do not carry your full heavy backpack over the mountain pass. Almost every hostel in Shkodër (such as Shkodra Backpackers or The Wanderers) will store your large luggage for free while you take a 25-liter daypack on the 3-day trek.
