While Tirana supermarkets and high-end hotels accept debit and credit cards, 85 percent of daily transactions across Albania (furgons, guesthouses, taverns, street markets) require physical cash.
ATM Fee Comparison for Foreign Cards
Most Albanian banks impose steep access fees on international debit cards:
- Bankers Petroleum / BKT: 700 to 800 ALL (€7 to €8) fee per transaction.
- Raiffeisen Bank: 700 to 800 ALL (€7 to €8) fee.
- Intesa Sanpaolo: 600 to 700 ALL fee.
- Credins Bank: Often charges the lowest access fee (around 400 ALL) or free depending on current interbank network agreements.
- OTP Bank: Often charges lower flat fees than Western European branches.
The Golden ATM Rules
- Withdraw the Maximum Daily Limit: If you must pay an ATM fee, withdraw 40,000 to 50,000 ALL (€400 to €500) in a single transaction to minimize the percentage lost to the fee.
- Always Decline DCC (Conversion): When the ATM screen asks whether you want to be billed in your home currency or Albanian Lek, ALWAYS choose Albanian Lek (without conversion). Accepting ATM conversion adds a hidden 7 to 10 percent markup.
- Euro Acceptance: Many Albanian guesthouses and hotels happily accept physical Euro banknotes for room payment and will give change in Euros or Lek at a fair 1:100 exchange rate.
