The Reality of the Albanian Riviera

The Albanian Riviera is one of Europe most talked-about summer destinations. While social media often calls Ksamil the 'Maldives of Europe', the reality is more nuanced: July and August bring dense crowds and commercialized beach clubs, while shoulder months (May, June, September) offer Mediterranean paradise at 40 percent of Greek or Croatian prices.

Comparing the Coastal Bases

  1. Sarandë: The regional transport hub and commercial port directly opposite Corfu. Best for budget apartments (€25 to €45), frequent bus connections, and ferry links, though the town beach is pebbly and urban.
  2. Ksamil: Famous for small turquoise islands and white sandy coves. In peak summer, beach loungers can cost €15 to €30 per pair. In June or September, prices drop to €5 to €10, making it delightful.
  3. Himarë: The laid-back travelers favorite. Offers a bilingual Greek-Albanian community, relaxed town beaches (Spille, Livadhi), cliff-top castle ruins, and traditional seafood tavernas under €9.
  4. Dhërmi & Drymades: Dramatic mountain-backdrop beaches with boutique resorts, beach clubs, and music festivals.

The Golden Rule of Cash in Albania

Albania is a cash-first society. Most small hotels, restaurants, bakeries, and minibuses do not accept credit cards. Always keep a buffer of Albanian Lek (ALL) or Euros in cash.
