Skopje City Break 2026: Neoclassical Statues, Old Bazaar & Matka Canyon

An Architectural Wonder

Divided by the Vardar River and the 15th-century Stone Bridge, Skopje is two distinct cities in one: on the north bank lies the historic Ottoman Old Bazaar; on the south bank lies the monumental, statue-filled neoclassical cityscape created by the Skopje 2014 project.

48-Hour Plan

• Morning: Explore the Stara Čaršija (Old Bazaar). Wander between 15th-century caravanserais (Suli An, Kapan An) and visit the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle.
• Lunch: Eat grilled kebapi and baked beans (tavče gravče) with hot bread at Destan for under 300 MKD (€5.00).
• Afternoon: Walk up to Kale Fortress for panoramic views, then explore the memorial house of Mother Teresa (who was born in Skopje in 1910).
• Day 2: Take city bus 60 from the central bus station to Matka Canyon (45 minutes, €0.57 on the Skopska card). Rent a kayak to explore Vrelo Cave or hike the cliff trail.
