Lake Como is a group of different bases around a large lake, not one compact resort. Choose Como, Varenna, Lecco or another town first, then plan any ferry. One town and a lakeside walk can make a good day without trying to cross the whole lake.

Pick the town before the train
Como is at the south-western end of the lake, Lecco at the south-eastern end and Varenna farther up the eastern shore. Bellagio sits between the lake's branches and has no railway station. These differences matter more than a generic Milan-to-Lake-Como journey time.

Read the right boat timetable
Use Navigazione Laghi's Como information for the actual date and service. The ordinary boat table, fast-service options and central-lake vehicle-ferry table are not interchangeable. Check the pier as well as the town name.

Give a villa visit enough time
In Varenna, Villa Monastero's 2026 garden admission is €13 for a standard adult. The house museum and combined garden options have different prices and hours. Choose what interests you rather than buying every inclusion simply because it is available.
Check the approach and physical access if steps are difficult. A lakeside photograph does not show every slope between the station, village and entrance.

Getting Around
Use regional trains for the shore they serve and Navigazione Laghi for the relevant boat route. Ordinary boats, fast services and vehicle ferries have different schedules and ticket conditions.
Eating for Less
Look at menus away from the first waterfront table if the price does not suit you. A bakery lunch can leave room for a lakeside drink or dinner you actually want. Do not assume every terrace adds the same surcharge.

A private boat hired only because public services look confusing. Check the public route first, then choose a private trip if its timing, route and group price are worth it to you.
