Zermatt gives you several ways to see the Matterhorn, from village viewpoints to high railways and walks. Stay long enough to give the weather a second chance, and choose one major paid mountain outing before adding another.

Arrive through Tasch or by through rail
Private cars stop at Tasch. The shuttle into Zermatt takes about 12 minutes, but add time for parking, moving bags and reaching your accommodation. The official arrival guide explains the options.
If you are already travelling by rail, book or check the complete journey to Zermatt rather than assuming you need to interrupt it in Tasch. Ask the accommodation whether your final walk is steep or whether a luggage transfer is useful. Taking an e-taxi can be a sensible choice with heavy bags or limited mobility.
Keep the first view inexpensive
Walk through the village and towards Kirchbrucke when the weather suits. A clear view from a village bridge is a worthwhile part of the trip even if you later pay for a mountain railway. Cloud can cover the Matterhorn at any time, so avoid making one short arrival window your only chance.
The old village lanes and a museum visit can fill a lower-level day. That gives you something to enjoy while keeping a high excursion movable.
Compare Gornergrat tickets like for like
The operator's 2026–27 fare table lists CHF 132 for a full-price Zermatt–Gornergrat return in May–October 2026, and CHF 102 for November 2026–April 2027. Eligible Swiss Half Fare Card and Swiss Travel Pass holders receive a reduction. Check the exact category before buying; a headline one-way price is not a full return.
A ticket to an intermediate station is another product. Plan the walk first, then compare the combinations. Do not assume separate uphill and downhill sections cost less than a return.
Treat Riffelsee as a mountain walk
The operator describes the Rotenboden–Riffelsee–Riffelberg route as about 3.1 km and one hour, with medium difficulty. That is walking time, before photo stops or slower conditions.
Check the trail status and weather, wear suitable footwear and keep the last train in mind. A summer trail description does not apply to a snow-covered winter route. The reflection also needs the right wind and light, so enjoy the walk without expecting a guaranteed photograph.
Budget for the approach as well as the summit

Kirchbrucke: village Matterhorn viewpoint

Compare the station area for arrivals with Steinmatte or Winkelmatten for your preferred village setting. Ask about the walk, slope and luggage transfer. Tasch adds a shuttle journey each time you visit Zermatt.
Getting Around
Private visitors normally leave cars in Tasch and take the train into Zermatt. The village also has authorised vehicles, e-taxis and buses, so car-free does not mean every street is pedestrian-only.
Eating for Less
Shop for a picnic in the village before going uphill. If you want raclette or another local meal, compare the full menu and portion format rather than relying on an old single-dish price.
Worth Paying For
Gornergrat is a good choice when you want a mountain railway, viewpoints and a possible walk from an intermediate station. The walk still depends on trail conditions.
Skip / Save Your Money
Skip paying for several high viewpoints in one day. A village walk and one unhurried mountain visit usually leave more time to enjoy both.
