Spend a day between the station and the hills

Piazza Maggiore, the Quadrilatero and the university area make a sensible central walking day, with breaks rather than a race through every street. The porticoes help in light rain and sun, but they do not remove the distance or every exposed section.

San Luca is a separate uphill walk. Start with enough time and water, and decide whether you want to walk both ways. An easier central day is a valid choice if you are tired after several rail journeys.

Replace the old tower-climb plan

Bologna Welcome still lists the Asinelli closure related to work around Garisenda. You can see the towers from the surrounding streets where access is permitted, but should not buy a trip on the assumption that a climb is available. Check current arrangements for any alternative tower visit.

Plan one good meal

Keep station changes comfortable

For a day in Florence, compare the fast train with the time you want in the city. For San Marino, plan a train to Rimini and the separate onward bus. Neither is a reason to keep every day in Bologna packed with early departures.
