The reviewed Bologna–San Marino connection takes about three hours: regional train 09:34–11:22 to Rimini, then the 11:45 bus arriving at San Marino Ex Stazione at 12:40. Other connections can take much longer. Leave time for the railway platform and bus stop. The autumn bus timetable ends on 7 November 2026. Its adult €7 single is additional to rail; a reservation guarantees carriage, not a seat. |

Connect through Rimini
Take a suitable train from Bologna Centrale to Rimini, then the separate international bus to San Marino. Allow roughly 2½–3 hours for the combined journey when the connection fits, with more time if your chosen train or bus requires it.
The Bonelli and Benedettini service takes about 55 minutes from Rimini railway station to Ex Stazione, Park 2 Bus. A standard full single is €7. Add that to the actual railway fare; it is not the price of the whole Bologna journey.
Match the train to the bus timetable
Use the timetable valid for your travel date and leave a buffer for the walk from platform to bus stop. The international bus runs to a schedule, so an arriving train does not mean it will wait. Booking guarantees carriage on the selected departure, not a seat.
For a day trip, select the return bus before buying a restrictive train home. An hour's buffer in Rimini is a useful planning choice if it fits your schedule, but cannot guarantee every onward connection.
Choose a day visit or one night
For a day out, leave large bags in Bologna and concentrate on the historic centre. For an evening meal without a last-bus deadline, consider the two-day Borgo and San Marino plan.
The Rimini bus, domestic SMUVI buses and Borgo cable car are different services. Check the appropriate ticket for each, and do not assume a domestic free-travel trial includes your international journey.
