Common Street Distraction Scams
Outside major landmarks like the Sacré-Cœur in Paris, Puerta del Sol in Madrid, or the Reichstag in Berlin, you will encounter aggressive street hustlers operating two classic setups.
1. The Fake Charity Petition Scam
Young people approach holding clipboards, claiming to represent a charity for deaf-mute children. They ask you to sign your name to support their cause.
- The Trap: Once you sign, they aggressively demand a mandatory cash 'donation' of €20 to €50. While you are focused on the clipboard, an accomplice may pick your pocket from behind.
- How to Neutralize: Keep walking. Say a firm 'No' with flat palms without breaking stride. Do not engage in conversation or touch the pen.
2. The Friendship Bracelet Trap
Men approach holding bundles of colorful threads. They attempt to grab your hand or finger to quickly braid a string bracelet onto your wrist, congratulating you with 'complimentary African friendship'. Once the string is knotted onto your wrist, they refuse to let go and demand €10 to €20, shouting loudly to cause a public scene if you resist.
- How to Neutralize: Keep your hands inside your pockets when walking through crowded monument approaches. If someone reaches for your arm, pull away firmly and loudly say 'Don't touch me'.
