What Is Included in a Typical Prato do Dia?
For a fixed price typically between €8.00 and €11.00, a standard lunch menu includes:
- The Main Dish: Usually a choice between one fresh grilled fish (such as dourada, robalo, or grilled sardines) and one slow-cooked meat dish (feijoada bean stew, cozido, or roasted pork with potatoes).
- Bread and Olives: Fresh crusty bread rolls.
- A Beverage: A small glass of draft beer (imperial), a half-bottle of house red or white wine (vinho da casa), or a bottle of mineral water.
- Dessert or Espresso: A traditional sweet (mousse de chocolate, pudim flan) or an espresso (café/bica).
How to Spot an Authentic Tasca
- Paper Tablecloths: Authentic neighborhood tascas almost universally use disposable white paper roll tablecloths laid over wooden tables.
- Handwritten Chalkboard Menus: The day's specials are written by hand on a chalkboard propped outside the front entrance or taped to the window on a piece of paper.
- No Glossy Multi-Language Photos: If a restaurant displays laminated picture menus in six languages with photos of paella, walk away. That is a tourist trap.
- Packed with Local Workers: If you see local construction workers, police officers, and office employees crowding the counter at 12:45, you have found the real thing.
