For a straightforward Budapest lunch, look for an étkezde or kifőzde. These names often point towards everyday cooked food and a changing selection of dishes. They do not guarantee one style of service or a fixed cheap price, so read the menu before sitting down.

A daily offer can be a useful starting point. Check whether the main includes a side, and whether a soup-and-main combination is sold as one price or two separate orders.

A menu example you can check

Frici Papa on Király utca is one established option to investigate. Its menu illustrates why side dishes matter: when checked on 8 September 2026, breaded cheese was listed at 2,899 HUF, with mashed potato at 499 HUF as an added side.

Check opening hours, especially on Sundays. A place aimed at the working lunch crowd may not be your best plan for a late dinner. Keep a second option nearby in case the dish you wanted has sold out.
