Prague or Budapest for a city break
Compare Prague's historic walks with Budapest's baths and Danube districts, including the transport and admissions that can change the cost.
Prague suits a break built around historic streets, river views and time on foot between neighbourhoods. Budapest offers a different mix, with the Danube, separate Buda and Pest districts and thermal baths that can occupy much of a day. Both reward staying longer than a rushed weekend checklist allows.
How to spend the days
In Prague, group the Old Town and nearby river walks on one day, then allow another for the castle area and Malá Strana. Leave time outside the busiest centre. The official Vinohrady and Vršovice guide offers a starting point for a neighbourhood afternoon.
In Budapest, explore central Pest separately from Buda's hillier sights. If a thermal bath is a priority, set aside sufficient time to enjoy it instead of fitting it between several distant attractions. Consult the official Széchenyi website for the selected day's ticket, facilities and current entry conditions.
A bath ticket is a meaningful budget item. Check whether it includes a locker or cabin and what you need to bring. A basic admission, an event and a package with extras are different products.
Let the itinerary drive the comparison
Price the same three nights in comparable rooms. Add the activities you will actually book, not an assumed universal daily amount. A Budapest stay with a bath visit and paid evening activity can cost more than a Prague visit centred on walks. The opposite is possible with a different set of choices.
Neither city uses the euro as its domestic currency. Compare Czech koruna and Hungarian forint costs using the exchange rate and card fees that apply when paying. A menu displaying euro prices is not proof of a favourable conversion.
Where to stay and how to move
In Prague, check hills, tram connections and the route back at night. The PID website covers transport planning and tickets. In Budapest, use BKK to check both the district and the particular stop nearest the accommodation.
