Where to stay in Budapest on a budget
Compare the Jewish Quarter, the Palace District and Buda, with advice on nightlife, hills and choosing a useful transport connection.
Budapest’s river divides the city in a way that matters for accommodation. Pest is useful for many restaurants, transport connections and evening plans. Buda may suit you better for its hills and a different pace, but it covers a large area.
Choose a few actual addresses to compare. Neither side of the river wins for every visitor.
District VII for lively evenings
The inner part of district VII, around the historic Jewish Quarter, makes it easy to spend an evening near your room. It is also an area where a bedroom’s position matters.
A courtyard apartment can still hear neighbours, deliveries or a nearby venue. Ask about quiet hours and look for recent reports about the room you are booking. Choose somewhere away from a busy bar frontage if you expect to sleep early.
Remember that this is a neighbourhood with Jewish heritage and places of worship, not simply a nightlife district. Give those visits their own time and respect opening arrangements.
District VIII around the Palace District
The inner Palace District can be a useful alternative for a central stay. Check the route to the National Museum area and the transport stops you need.
District VIII extends well beyond these streets. A hotel labelled “Palace District” or “Józsefváros” deserves an address check, particularly if you are comparing it with a room near the inner ring road.

Buda for a different setting
A stay around the Castle District can suit travellers who want its streets and viewpoints close by. The official Buda Palace District guide explains the main sites.
Hills and access routes need attention. A room beside a metro station below the hill is not the same as one up in the castle streets. Check the climb, bus connection and evening journey before treating two Buda properties as equivalent.
For all three options, price the entire stay with taxes, cooling and cancellation terms considered. There is no dependable rule that one district saves a fixed percentage.
