Where to stay in Amsterdam with costs in mind
Noord and Oud-West offer different ways to enjoy Amsterdam, but neither sits outside the city's tourist-tax rules.
Amsterdam accommodation needs a full-price comparison. A low first-screen room rate can look less appealing once the final bill includes tax and the journeys from the property to your plans.
Moving to Noord or Oud-West does not, by itself, avoid Amsterdam tourist tax. Both are within the municipality. Choose the area for its location and accommodation options, then compare the total.
Understand the tax before comparing rooms
The City of Amsterdam lists tourist tax at 12.5% of the overnight price excluding VAT, checked on 8 September 2026. Ask whether the booking total already includes it so you do not add it twice.
The calculation basis matters. A €100 taxable overnight amount would produce €12.50 tourist tax; that is an arithmetic example, not a claim about the tax treatment of every €100 price displayed online.
A property outside the municipality may have another local tax and additional travel costs. Compare the actual location and final bill rather than assuming the tax disappears everywhere beyond the centre.
Noord depends on the exact ferry or metro connection
Amsterdam Noord is across the IJ from Centraal. Free ferries make some locations convenient, but the short crossing is only one part of the journey.
A room near a ferry landing differs from one requiring another bus ride or a long walk. NDSM and the area near the crossings immediately behind Centraal should not be treated as the same base.
Check the relevant route's operating hours with GVB, including the evening you expect to return. Keep the walking route from the landing to the property with your booking information.
Oud-West can suit days built around walking
Oud-West gives you access to local shops and food stops around places such as De Hallen, with the centre and Vondelpark useful directions for a day's walk.
It is still a sizeable area. Look at the actual tram stop and the route to your first museum or activity. A property near a busy road needs a room-noise check just as a central property does.
If your stay is short, include one central option in the comparison. The highest room price does not always produce the highest overall trip cost, particularly when it saves late-night transfers.
Compare the stay you will actually book
Use identical dates, guest numbers and cancellation terms. Check whether breakfast, luggage storage and a lift are included or available. For apartments, spread cleaning and service fees across the full stay.
