Amsterdam's free ferries to Noord and NDSM
Use the free IJ ferries for a simple trip across the water, and choose the right landing for a walk in Noord or a visit to NDSM.
The ferries behind Amsterdam Centraal are an easy way to cross the IJ and spend time in Noord. You can use them for a short walk by the water or as the start of a longer visit to NDSM.
The crossing itself is free on these GVB IJ routes. Food, museums, guided tours and special events on the other side have their own prices.
Choose the landing you want
GVB's ferry information lists the routes and explains which crossings are free. Two useful options from Centraal are F3 to Buiksloterweg and F4 to NDSM.
Buiksloterweg is the shorter hop to the area across from the station. NDSM is a different landing farther along the water. Check the destination sign before joining the queue, especially if several ferries are loading nearby.
Leave room for people and bicycles to get off before boarding. Keep bags close to you and follow crew instructions about where to stand. These are everyday transport services, so give other passengers space when stopping for photographs.
If you are travelling with a bicycle, be ready to move it safely through the boarding area. Do not block the ramp while checking a map.
Give NDSM some time on foot
NDSM is a former shipyard with outdoor art, large industrial buildings and places to eat. Its visitor information explains that the site is free to visit, while individual events and organisations may charge admission.
Walk around before deciding which paid activity interests you. Outdoor artworks change, and a market or festival advertised in an old photograph may not be running on your travel date.
Check opening hours if you have a particular museum, café or event in mind. The ferry being available does not mean every place at the landing is open.
Plan a comfortable return
Use the current ferry timetable for your return, particularly late in the evening. Services can change during maintenance or staff shortages, and different routes do not always have the same hours.
Bring a layer for wind across the water. If it rains, a short crossing followed by a nearby indoor stop may be more enjoyable than a long exposed walk.
