Visiting Gravensteen and the Ghent Altarpiece

Gravensteen and the Ghent Altarpiece make a good pair for a day in Ghent, but they are very different visits. The castle involves walking through a fortress. The altarpiece rewards slower looking in a cathedral setting. Put a lunch break and a short walk between them.

Gravensteen first

The castle stands in the historic centre, so it is easy to place within a wider walk. The city's visitor information lists the admission options and includes an audio guide with the ticket. Choose the tour style that suits you rather than assuming every audio option has the same tone.

Book ahead if your day is tightly scheduled. Inside, expect steps, narrow passages and changes of level. Check accessibility before paying if you cannot manage stairs. A medieval-looking exterior does not tell you how much of the interior route will work for you.

Leave some time afterwards to look back at the castle from the surrounding streets. You do not need to fill every remaining minute with another museum.

Know what is on display at the cathedral

The official Ghent Altarpiece booking page, checked on 8 September 2026, says the final restoration phase affects seven panels. High-quality photographs replace those panels in the cathedral during the work, with completion scheduled for spring 2027. Restoration of the upper register can be seen at the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent.

This does not make the cathedral visit pointless, but it changes what you will see. Read the current notice and choose between an altarpiece-only visit and a longer visitor experience. General cathedral access should not be confused with admission to the dedicated altarpiece display.

If the restoration itself interests you, plan the Museum of Fine Arts as an additional visit with its own hours and ticket arrangements. It is not next door to the cathedral.
