Bruges or Ghent as a base for your trip?
Choose the city where you want to spend your evenings, then check the station journey and the outings you plan to make.
You can visit Bruges and Ghent on the same trip without moving your bags between them. The more useful question is where you would like to finish the day: close to Bruges' historic sights, or with an evening in Ghent after the day visitors have left.
Check accommodation for the same nights before assuming one city is the cheaper base. Events, weekends and room availability can change that comparison.
Staying in Bruges
Bruges suits a trip in which wandering the historic centre is the main event. Staying there lets you spread those walks over an evening and the following morning instead of fitting everything between two trains.
A central room still needs a luggage plan. The railway station is outside the core sightseeing streets, so map the journey to reception rather than judging the whole transfer by the train arrival time. Ask whether taxis can reach the entrance and whether stairs are unavoidable.
Use Visit Bruges to choose a few sights before booking. If your shortlist is concentrated in the centre, paying a little more for a convenient room may save repeated transfers.
Staying in Ghent
Ghent offers a substantial city visit of its own. Leave time for its historic centre and an evening meal rather than treating it only as a dormitory for Bruges.
The official accommodation directory includes central options such as Hostel Uppelink and De Draecke, alongside hotels near different stations. These are examples to investigate, not places tested for this guide or guaranteed low-price bookings.
Gent-Sint-Pieters and Gent-Dampoort are separate stations. Check which one your chosen service uses and how you reach the property from there. A room described as “near the station” needs a station name.
Keep the day trip simple
Use SNCB's journey planner for the actual date and departure station. Allow for the journey between each station and the places you want to visit, plus a little time to buy or retrieve tickets.
Before committing to dinner in the other city, check a suitable return train and a later backup. Engineering works can change an otherwise straightforward journey.
For a two-night visit, one base usually avoids an unnecessary checkout, bag-storage stop and second check-in. Moving can still make sense if the trip continues from the other city or you particularly want an evening in both.
