Flying with a wheelchair or mobility aid
Give the airline enough information to plan safe handling of your equipment. A wheelchair is part of your journey, so discuss the arrangements before choosing a flight with a tight connection.
Prepare an equipment note
Write down the make, model, dimensions and weight. Explain what folds or detaches and how the equipment can be moved safely. For powered equipment, have the manufacturer’s battery information ready. Ask the airline what it needs to approve carriage for your aircraft and route.
Agree on handover and return
Ask how far you can use your own equipment through the airport, where it will be handed over and where it should come back. Confirm the process at connections as well as your final destination. Put simple handling instructions with the equipment and keep a copy yourself.
Keep a practical record
Photograph the equipment before handover and note detachable parts. Keep the baggage or handling receipt. If something is missing or damaged, report it to the airline or airport team before leaving where practical, and keep the report number.
Check the airline’s battery instructions
Battery rules depend on the equipment and battery type. Do not remove or disconnect a battery just because another traveller was told to do so. Follow the airline’s confirmed instructions and the manufacturer’s guidance for your own device.
