Birmingham: plan a short break

For a short visit, keep the city centre, canals and Jewellery Quarter in manageable parts of the day. Choose accommodation around the places you will use, rather than trying to fit every district into one walk.

Arriving by train or plane

Check the station on your rail ticket: New Street and Moor Street are separate stations. From Birmingham Airport, the free Air-Rail Link connects the terminal with Birmingham International station. The airport lists a direct train to New Street at about 10 minutes; add waiting and your walk to the accommodation.

Choosing where to stay

A base near New Street can make an early train or airport connection easier. Compare the walk to a room around the canals or Jewellery Quarter with the places you want to visit. Read recent information about street noise, stairs and late check-in before choosing on price alone.

A relaxed first day

Start in the city centre, leave time for lunch and walk towards the canal area when the weather suits. Keep the Jewellery Quarter for a separate stretch rather than racing between stops. For a rainy period, check the museums and exhibitions that interest you before setting out; opening days and booking requirements can differ.

Build a budget in pounds

Use your actual room quote, including charges, and divide shared room costs by the people sharing. Add food, local travel and the paid visits you have chosen. Keep airport travel and any intercity tickets separate. Compare dates around major events before paying for a non-refundable room.

Before you leave

Check your departure station and ticket restrictions again. If flying, allow time for the train to Birmingham International, the Air-Rail Link and the terminal. The link has operating hours, so check an early or late connection with the airport rather than assuming it runs all night.
