The UK is easier to plan as a few connected regions. London and York fit naturally on the railway to Edinburgh; Bath and Cardiff sit on a different line from London. Choose the places you want time in, then compare the journeys and rooms together.

Put the stations on your plan
London has several mainline stations. Trains towards York and Edinburgh use King's Cross, Manchester trains use Euston, and GWR serves Bath and Cardiff from Paddington. Eurostar leaves from St Pancras International. A connection across London needs local travel and time with your luggage, even when both tickets simply say London.
Our London guide explains a useful first base. For a journey north, combine York with Edinburgh. Manchester and Glasgow can form another pair of city stays. Do not buy a rail pass until you have priced the main journeys, any reservations and the pass itself.
Buy a ticket that fits the day
An Advance fare usually ties you to the booked service. That can suit a planned city move, but it is less forgiving immediately after a flight. Compare the flexible option for that arrival day. Off-Peak restrictions vary by ticket and direction; there is no single start time across Britain.
National Rail explains split tickets. For a normal split, the train must call where the tickets join. Keep all tickets and any required Railcard available. Include booking fees when comparing the final saving.
ScotRail has removed peak fares on its own services. That does not remove another operator's restrictions on a cross-border journey, or the separate conditions of a Railcard or pass. Use ScotRail's current explanation for the Scottish part.
Keep pounds and euros separate
England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland use pounds sterling. The Republic of Ireland uses euros. The adjustable spending plans on this site use euros for comparison; those chosen amounts are not quoted UK hotel prices or a fixed exchange rate. Enter the actual room total and convert with your payment provider's rate when booking.
For cash machines and card terminals, read any offered conversion before accepting. Selecting pounds for a UK purchase leaves the conversion to your card arrangement, which may still charge a fee. Carry a separate backup payment method.
Make the free visits useful
The British Museum, National Museum of Scotland and Kelvingrove have free general collections. Special exhibitions and other activities can cost extra. Choose a few rooms that interest you, and look at booking and closure information before travelling across a city.
A neighbourhood meal can be good value without being the cheapest menu in town. Compare the full order, including drinks and any disclosed service charge. A supermarket lunch helps most when it leaves room for a meal you want later, rather than creating another long detour.
Travelling between Britain and Ireland
Belfast is in Northern Ireland, part of the UK. Dublin, Galway and Killarney are in the Republic of Ireland. Use our Belfast to Dublin guide for the stations and transport choices.
Check UK visa or ETA requirements for each traveller. British and Irish citizens do not need an ETA; other exemptions depend on status. A tourist staying briefly in Ireland does not qualify as an Irish resident. The official ETA page lists the current £20 fee. UK permission does not settle entry to Ireland or Schengen.
For a Highland or island extension, settle the last bus, ferry and accommodation transfer before booking. Inverness is a practical hub, but it does not have a train to every Highland town.

Price the train before reserving a distant hotel. Use free museum collections between the visits you choose to pay for, and compare your actual local journeys before buying a travel pass.
Flagship Destinations & Major Bases
Manchester is a good city for a library visit, a canal walk and an evening built around music or football. Keep the centre and a stadium outing separate in your plan, and check match dates before comparing rooms.
York suits a stay where you can return to the same streets at different times: the walls in daylight, the lanes before the busiest part of the day, and a slower meal after the day-trippers leave. A compact centre still leaves plenty to choose between.
Bath rewards time on foot: a visit to the Roman Baths, a walk uphill to the Georgian streets, and a break beside the river. Decide whether you want the historic bathing site, a modern spa session or both, because they use separate tickets.
Regional Cities, Coastlines & Countryside
Oxford is a working university city, so choose a few buildings you want to enter and enjoy the streets between them. The free Ashmolean and Weston Library can give the visit substance without paying for every college gateway.
Edinburgh has short map distances and real climbs. Give the Old Town, a museum and a park walk enough time, then choose a separate trip to Leith if it interests you. Castle tickets and festival dates deserve attention before the rest of the plan.
Glasgow suits a city stay built around art, music and neighbourhood walks. The West End and city centre offer different starting points, while a stadium or riverside museum can need another journey. Choose the evening plan before deciding where to sleep.
Inverness is a useful base for a river walk, a Loch Ness outing and selected Highland journeys. It is also a transport hub, which does not mean every scenic place is a simple day trip. Choose the excursion and return connection before adding another night.
Cardiff gives you a compact city centre, castle history and a separate waterfront area to explore. St Fagans deserves its own outing beyond the centre. Match those choices to the time you have rather than trying to join them all in one short walk.
Belfast is a useful base for maritime history, museums and a carefully planned north-coast outing. Keep the city, its recent history and the Antrim Coast as distinct parts of the visit. The city uses pounds, even if you have arrived from Dublin with euros.
