Keep the centre and the Bay separate
Cardiff Central is useful for a city-centre stay. The castle, covered arcades and market can form a walk from this side of town, with pauses for food and an indoor visit. Cardiff Bay is a separate destination; allow for the journey rather than adding it as a quick stop just before a train.
A hotel near the stadium can be convenient, but matches and large events affect both room demand and the surrounding streets. Confirm arrival instructions and reception hours if you will reach the city during an event.
Choose the castle ticket deliberately
Cardiff Castle's admission guide describes the standard ticket and optional tours. The Castle Key scheme gives free admission to eligible people who live or work in Cardiff; it is not a free-entry rule for every tourist.
Decide whether the decorated interiors and history are what you want from the day. If you mostly want a walk outdoors, Bute Park is another way to spend time near the centre without buying an unrelated ticket.
Give St Fagans a proper outing
St Fagans National Museum of History has free general entry. It spreads across outdoor grounds and historic buildings, so dress for time outside rather than treating it as a single indoor gallery. Some exhibitions, activities and events can cost extra; parking is charged separately.
Plan the outward and return transport before setting off. Opening hours for individual buildings and current access arrangements can shape what you see. Choose a few parts that interest you and leave time to walk between them.
Arriving from the airport
Cardiff Airport's 905 shuttle connects the terminal with Rhoose railway station. From there, take the appropriate train towards Cardiff. A through ticket can include the shuttle when bought for the airport connection; confirm that your ticket covers both parts.
The 304 bus is another airport-to-city option. Use the current First Bus timetable for the stops and date. Older T9 express-bus instructions should not guide this journey.
If arriving from London, the London to Cardiff route compares Paddington trains with coaches. Add the final journey from the actual arrival stop before deciding which ticket is more convenient.

Price for your journeyThe 304 runs from the airport to Cardiff Bus Interchange via Barry. Published weekday journeys take about 1¼–1¾ hours; check the departure for your travel date. For a rail alternative, take the 905 shuttle to Rhoose Cardiff International Airport station and connect to a train. A Cardiff Air Bus through ticket includes the shuttle.
