Edinburgh has short map distances and real climbs. Give the Old Town, a museum and a park walk enough time, then choose a separate trip to Leith if it interests you. Castle tickets and festival dates deserve attention before the rest of the plan.

Make the room work with the hills
Waverley sits between the Old and New Towns, but a nearby hotel can still involve a steep walk or several flights of stairs. Haymarket is useful for some arrivals and onward rail journeys. For a Leith stay, compare the evening trip back as well as the daytime connection.
Ask about lift access and the street-facing room if quiet matters. During major festivals, compare the full stay price before committing to a cheap transport fare. A room farther away only helps if the repeated journeys still suit you.
Choose the castle slot first
Edinburgh Castle's ticket page lists standard adult entry at £23.50 online and £26 for walk-up admission when available. If online tickets are sold out, do not count on a separate supply at the entrance.
Leave time inside before returning to the Royal Mile. If the weather is poor or the castle does not interest you, the National Museum of Scotland offers free general collections on Chambers Street. Some special exhibitions are charged separately.
Pay for the journeys you need
The current Lothian fare table lists an adult city single at £2.40, City DAY at £6 and the eligible contactless city cap at £5.70. These are different products. Keep the same card or device for capping and follow the operator's payment instructions.
For airport travel, Airlink 100 is £6 for an adult single. The tram's adult airport single is £7.50. A city-only day ticket does not include the airport tram stop. Select the stop nearest your accommodation and check current service notices, rather than assuming the airport journey ends at Waverley itself.
Treat Arthur's Seat as a walk in the hills
Holyrood Park is free. Choose a route for your ability, footwear, daylight and the forecast. Wind and wet rock can make a summit outing very different from a walk along the Royal Mile.
Follow path closures; the Radical Road is currently closed. A lower park walk can be the better choice on an unsuitable day. Do not start a sunset climb without planning the descent in daylight or bringing suitable equipment.
For the next city, Edinburgh to Glasgow is a short rail or coach journey. The Inverness route needs a larger part of the day, with time after arrival to find your room.

Book Edinburgh Castle if its history is a priority: standard adult tickets are £23.50 online or £26 at the gate when available. Choose a time that leaves room to explore.
Skip / Save Your Money
The National Museum of Scotland has free general entry. You can make it the main indoor visit rather than buying a pass for several attractions you would not otherwise choose.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
A City DAY ticket does not cover the airport tram stop. Edinburgh Castle tickets can sell out, and arriving at the gate does not create extra availability when the online allocation is gone.
