Plan food and luggage
Bring something to eat if your plans depend on having lunch en route; do not assume every departure has the same catering. Check luggage space and reservation options. A scenic railway ride is enjoyable in its own right, so leave the arrival afternoon for a short riverside walk if the journey runs late.
Separate the wider Highlands
Inverness station is in the city. Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle and Culloden need their own bus, tour or other transfer. Book any outing around its return to Inverness, especially outside the main season. A railway ticket to the city does not cover those visits.
